SYNOPSIS: A runaway slave from South Carolina makes it to the gold fields of Australia where British colonialism and onerous fees imposed by the crown inflict another kind of bondage. John Joseph becomes a leader in the gold digger’s rebellion of 1854. He is charged with treason and dragged into the Colonial court. He refuses to capitulate. He refuses to bow to the “masters.” Representing himself he delivers an impassioned cry for freedom that touches hearts and mind and shifts the course of history. The acquittal of John Joseph leads to the acquittal of 13 others, also charged with treason. That breaks the iron grip of the Colonial overlords and ends the treachery of the thugs appointed as goldfield commissioners. In the end he returns to his wife and child in America and the life of freedom that he had promised them.
