If the history of the account tells more about John's child and the mother of his child (I say "mother of his child" because it was more common that slaves were not allowed to marry), then it should be developed as a backdrop to the main story of John's struggle with the Australian legal system. The story of the mother and child will add to the intensity of John's struggle.
