Holes (2003) PG

Synopsis:

Stanley Yelnats is an unassuming adolescent whose family has been cursed for generations. One day, after Stanley is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers, he is sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake. But when he gets there, he discovers that this camp is really more like a prison. Under the supervision of the fiery Mr. Sir (John Voight) and goofy Dr. Pendanski, Stanley and his cohorts must spend each day digging holes in the desert, in order "to build character." Or at least that's what The Warden (Sigourney Weaver) says. When Stanley finally gathers up the courage to escape the camp, he and fellow escapee Zero stumble across a secret that will expose Camp Green Lake for the evil place that it is, and erase the Yelnats family curse forever. This family film is smart, funny, and engaging.

Virtues and Values:

Holes teaches enormously valuable lessons about respect, teamwork, and honesty, making Holes a must-see for individuals everywhere. Although some of the themes in the film are more subtly betrayed and possibly missed due to the entertaining and engaging nature of the film, the overall value and moral of movie shines through. For example, as Stanley gets bullied by the other kids, the actions are denounced and exposed which teaches the importance of loyalty and friendship. Stanley shows true compassion when he make friends with the loner in the group, Zero, and takes him under his wing. He takes the time to teach Zero to read and ultimately saves his life. Irrational prejudice is exposed when a small fight breaks out because of some romance between Kate and an African American boy at the ranch. And justice is shown when the evils of the antagonists get caught and suffer the consequences of their wrongdoings.

Just a fun movie. I am glad friends recommended it to me and that it is recommended here. It reminds me of the more innocent Saturday matinee movies of my youth.
