Invincible (2006) PG
In the summer of 1976, 30-year old Vince Papale is having a tough run of luck. He's been working as a supply teacher for two days a week but has just found out that his job has been eliminated because of budget cuts. His wife gives up on him saying he'll never amount to anything and asks for a divorce. He works as a bartender and plays football with his friends. When the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Dick Vermeil, announces that he will hold open tryouts for the team, Vince reluctantly decides to give a try. In an almost unheard of feat, he manages to make the team and enjoyed a three-year career as a professional football player. Based on a true story.
Invincible fits perfectly in the long lineup of classic Disney stories that are not only feel good with inspiring themes but also leave you uplifted and entertained. Vince's (the main character) perseverance, humility and loyalty are the source of motivation throughout the film. No matter how many times he's knocked down—both on the field and off—he finds the strength to get back on his feet.
A large part of his success is due to strong support from his friends and family. His friend Max, who owns the bar where he works, loans him some money when he can't pay the rent. His father, Frank, also helps him out and tells him, "We've had some rough times, but we stick together on this, you and me." And his best friend Tommy provides great support even though he is going through some personal hardships.
Even the head football coach, Vermeil, is strengthened by a supportive wife. She not only seems to understand the demands and stress of his job (Vermeil's coaching and management style is not welcomed at first by the team), she is also confident in their relationship. When faced with a tough decision, she pulls from his own words of inspiration, reminding him that "character is tested when you're up against it." Vermeil delivers equally upstanding messages to his players, urging them to play without fear and telling them that they inspire hope in the millions of Eagle's football fans.
Although there are a few barroom scenes and a kiss or two that seemingly lead to more, this film was consciously made in classic Disney fashion. It is a sports classic that will entertain and inspire the whole family.
